Treatment Procedures
Evaluation and Waiting List: The journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation by a
multidisciplinary transplant team, including hepatologists, surgeons, nurses, and social workers. If
deemed eligible, the patient is placed on a waiting list for a suitable donor liver.
Donor Matching: Donor livers are obtained from deceased donors who meet specific
criteria for organ donation or from living donors willing to donate a portion of their liver.
Matching is based on factors such as blood type, body size, and compatibility.
Transplant Surgery: When a suitable donor liver becomes available, the transplant
surgery is performed. The recipient's diseased liver is removed, and the donor liver is implanted,
connecting it to the recipient's blood vessels and bile ducts.
Post-Transplant Care: Following surgery, the patient undergoes intensive
post-transplant care in the hospital, including monitoring for signs of rejection, infection, and
complications. Immunosuppressive medications are prescribed to prevent rejection of the transplanted
liver.
Recovery and Rehabilitation: After discharge from the hospital, the patient continues
recovery and rehabilitation at home. Regular follow-up visits with the transplant team are essential
to monitor liver function, adjust medications, and address any issues that may arise.
